Almaty. October 7. Kazakhstan Today - Kazakhstan plans to extract 15 400 tons of uranium a year by 2010. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, Marat Tazhin, informed in Washington in Carnegie's Fund making the report - Kazakhstan in the Global World on Friday, the agency reports referring to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

"Strategy of the government of Kazakhstan consists in raising energy efficiency and ecological compatibility, having developed the program concerning energy saving and ecology," M. Tazhin said.

One of the directions of development of alternative energy sources and at the same time the way of struggle against global warming and climatic change can become atomic engineering.

"As of today, Kazakhstan occupies the second place in the world on discovered stocks of uranium (after Australia), but in 2010 we can already be on top by extraction of uranium with the planned volume at the level of 15 400 tons a year," M. Tazhin said.

"Besides, earlier not participating in manufacturing of heat-generating elements, Kazakhstan can cover 15 % of this market by 2015. The national nuclear company of Kazakhstan Kazatomprom, becoming the co-owner of the largest American company Westinghouse, will participate in construction of atomic power stations," the Minister noted.
