Coast of Chile struck 8.8-magnitude earthquake

The coast of Chile was struck by a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, the agency reports citing the news agency RosBusinessConsulting (RBC).

Almaty. March 1. Kazakhstan Today - The coast of Chile was struck by a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, the agency reports citing the news agency RosBusinessConsulting (RBC).

According to the US Geological Service, the earthquake has occurred at the ocean coast of Chile, in 320 kilometers to the north from Santiago. The force of the earthquake was initially estimated at the level of 8.5 points.

The tremors led to electricity cut out even in the capital Chile, which is far enough from the epicenter, having made the buildings to shake.

The closest to the epicenter (in 115 kilometres) is a second-large city of the country - Concepcion. The Chilean authorities are now trying to estimate the scales of damage to the city.
