Heathrow Airport terminal 5 re-opened after a suspicious package had been declared safe, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Almaty. March 11. Kazakhstan Today - Heathrow Airport terminal 5 re-opened after a suspicious package had been declared safe, Kazakhstan Today reports.

British police have cleared a suspicious package that was found at London's Heathrow Airport on Thursday afternoon, officials said, Channel6News reported.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said officers were called to a suspicious package in Terminal 5 on early Thursday afternoon, prompting a small evacuation. The package was later declared safe and police were talking with a man about the incident. "We're just having a chat with him. He's not been arrested," a spokesman said, denying media reports that said he had been arrested.

Earlier, Sky News reported that police were in an armed stand-off with a man threatening to blow himself up, but police later denied this. "It's not as exciting as Sky News would have you believe," the Metropolitan Police said. "There is no armed stand-off."

BBC Home Affairs Correspondent Danny Shaw said a suspect was in police custody while the package was examined, BBC News informs.

No new passengers were allowed to enter the building, but planes took off and landed as normal throughout the incident.

Heathrow Airport handles more international passengers than any other airport in the world.

T5, which cost 4.3bn pounds to build and opened in March 2008, is able to handle 30 million passengers a year.
