Moderate quake hits China, 14 dead

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit China today, 14 people died and 126 other were injured, Kazakhstan Today reports.

Almaty. March 10. Kazakhstan Today - A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit China today, 14 people died and 126 other were injured, Kazakhstan Today reports.

An earthquake toppled houses and damaged a hotel and supermarket in China's extreme southwest near the border with Myanmar on Thursday, killing at least 14 people and injuring more than 150, officials and state media said, USA Today reported.

Witnesses reported that part of a supermarket had collapsed in the magnitude 5.8 earthquake, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

At least 13 people were killed and 126 other people were hurt, said an official with the Yunnan Disaster Relief Center who would only give his surname, Chen.

Another official on duty at the center, Gao Shaotang, said many houses had been toppled.

The website of the government earthquake monitoring station said the quake struck in Yunnan just before 1 p.m. at a depth of 6 miles.

The United States Geological Survey put the quake's magnitude at 5.4. Quakes of magnitude 5 or more are capable of causing damage.

The epicenter is in a mountainous area 1,500 miles southwest of Beijing, close to the border with Myanmar.
