Prospects for the development of the nuclear industry were discussed by senators

Deputies of the Senate Committee on Economic Policy, Innovative Development and Entrepreneurship held a meeting with the leadership of NAC Kazatomprom JSC, press service of the Senate reports.

The main topic of discussion was the issues of further improvement of the activities of the national operator for the import and export of uranium and its compounds, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, special equipment and technologies.

Senate Committee Chairman, Suindik Aldashev noted that Kazatomprom remains the world's largest uranium producer in 2022, accounting for about 22% of the world's uranium production.

Improving the efficiency of Kazatomprom's activities is decisive for the further development of the nuclear industry in Kazakhstan. To do this, it is necessary to continue work on the introduction of new and optimization of used methods of geological exploration, mining and processing of uranium, increasing the level of production processing, replenishing the raw material base, diversifying transport routes for the supply of uranium and training highly qualified personnel," the senator emphasized.


Chairman of the Board of NAC Kazatomprom JSC, Yerzhan Mukanov informed the senators that the structure of the enterprise includes 14 uranium mining and 4 uranium processing companies, as well as 16 service and auxiliary enterprises. In addition, he spoke about three major projects planned for implementation. Among them: the construction of a sulfuric acid plant with a capacity of 800 thousand tons per year, the construction of an onshore processing complex with a capacity of 900 tons per year and a refining plant for uranium oxide with a capacity of 6,000 tons per year.

These projects will make it possible to reduce the shortage of sulfuric acid and provide it to enterprises in the country, as well as to start manufacturing products of higher value added.

Summing up the meeting, Deputy Aldashev stressed that the Senate Committee is open to joint work and proposals aimed at further increasing the diversification and efficiency of the nuclear industry in Kazakhstan in general and Kazatomprom in particular.
