China on Monday launched the Lijian-1 Y5 commercial carrier rocket with 15 satellites onboard, Xinhua reports.
The rocket blasted off at 12:03 p.m. (Beijing Time) from a commercial aerospace innovation pilot zone in northwest China and sent the 15 satellites, including satellites from the Jilin-1 Gaofen series, Yunyao-1 series, Xiguang-1 series and a remote-sensing satellite launched for Oman, into their planned orbits.
The Lijian-1 carrier rocket was developed by CAS Space, a commercial spaceflight company established by the Institute of Mechanics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This rocket series completed its maiden flight on July 7, 2022, and has now launched a total of 57 satellites in the course of five flight missions.
With a length of 30 meters, a takeoff weight of 135 tonnes, and a takeoff thrust of 200 tonnes, Lijian-1 can send a payload of 1.5 tonnes to a 500-km sun-synchronous orbit, or a payload of 2 tonnes to low Earth orbit.
The Lijian-1 Y5 carrier rocket uses a payload fairing with a diameter of 3.35 meters to accommodate the larger space required by satellites. Payload fairing configuration can be adjusted according to the payload capacity and space requirements of satellites in future missions.
The Yunyao-1 series onboard the rocket consists of six satellites, which are primarily designed for atmospheric detection or monitoring environmental hot spots.
The remote-sensing satellite launched for Oman utilized artificial intelligence to calculate its load. The intelligent operating system of the satellite can conduct in-orbit processing and analysis, and it can be applied in detailed land surveys, urban planning, forest surveys and disaster monitoring.
This mission marks the first time for Chinese commercial space enterprises to provide launch services to international users, highlighting that the Lijian-1 carrier rocket has officially entered the international commercial space market, said Shi Xiaoning, chief designer of the rocket.
Shi noted that the cost performance and product reliability of the rocket have been recognized by the international market.

Inclusivity, sustainability at forefront of ASEAN chairmanship: Malaysian official
Tell a friend
Malaysia will place inclusivity and sustainability at the forefront of its chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025, a Malaysian official said on Tuesday, Xinhua reports.
Malaysia will also continue upholding the values that have led to the regional bloc's success in facing various challenges, namely neutrality, dialogue, and regional cooperation, which have kept the region stable, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said in his speech at an event promoting Malaysia's logo and theme for its chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.
I have always believed that, as a community, we have not only withstood, but prevailed, over many of our shared obstacles together through the decades. We have achieved this the ASEAN way," he said.
ASEAN's nuanced and pragmatic approach to managing geopolitical competition between major powers is increasingly seen as a model for the rest of the developing world," he added.
Malaysia will also continue to push for greater commitment to enhance ASEAN intra-trade and investment, while ensuring that ASEAN is able to leverage advances in sciences, technology and innovation, and harness the benefits of digital transformation and new technologies, he said.
With the theme of its chairmanship being "Inclusivity and Sustainability", Mohamad said ASEAN is moving to realize ASEAN Community Vision 2045 aimed at charting its strategic direction for the next 20 years.
The logo itself is built around Malaysia's national flower, the hibiscus, which is also found in other ASEAN states, symbolizing the cultural richness, unity and identity of the region.
The colours used in the logo (blue, red, yellow and white) represent the main colours of the flags of all ASEAN member states with the ASEAN logo in the flower's center representing the principle of ASEAN centrality.
The logo and the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability" were officially unveiled by Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the closing ceremony of the 44th and 45th ASEAN summits and related summits on Oct. 11 in Vientiane, capital of laos, where Malaysia accepted the ASEAN chairmanship from Laos.
Malaysia will officially assume the chair of ASEAN on Jan. 1, 2025.
Founded in 1967, ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

EU's extreme climate events cost €26 billion annually over past decade
Tell a friend
European Court of Auditors (ECA) has said that economic losses from extreme climate-related events in the European Union have averaged €26 billion per year over the last decade, WAM reports.
In its report, the Court said that exposing today’s EU economy to global warming of 1.5 to 3°C above pre-industrial levels - a conservative estimate - would result in an annual economic loss of between €42 and €175 billion.
We looked at how the EU is addressing the urgent need to adapt to recurring extreme climate conditions" said Klaus-Heiner Lehne, the ECA Member responsible for the audit. "We found issues in the way policies are implemented on the ground. If the implementation of EU action does not improve, there is a risk that EU adaptation ambitions may not keep pace with climate change."
The auditors examined national adaptation policies in France, Estonia, Austria and Poland, and found them generally consistent with EU strategy. However, the auditors also found cases of outdated scientific data in national adaptation-strategy documents, and either underestimates or omissions of the cost of adaptation measures.
Although the EU considers "the local level to be the bedrock of adaptation", the auditors surveyed 400 municipalities in the audited member states and found that respondents were largely unaware of climate adaptation strategies and plans, and were not using the EU’s climate adaptation tools (Climate-ADAPT, Copernicus and the EU Covenant of Mayors).
Over half of the audited projects addressed climate risks effectively, and the auditors also identified some good practices. However, they also came across cases of conflicting priorities where climate adaptation objectives had to coexist with other objectives, such as competitiveness or regional development.

Tell a friend
Japan's space agency said Tuesday that it has officially approved two candidates who underwent domestic training as astronauts, with expectations growing that they may join NASA's mission to the Moon, Kyodo reports.
Makoto Suwa, 47, a former disaster prevention specialist at the World Bank, and Ayu Yoneda, 29, who served as a surgeon at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center, plan to move to the United States to enhance their knowledge and skills in space activities.
At the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Suwa and Yoneda, who were certified as astronauts on Monday, hope to be part of the Artemis Moon exploration program.
The Artemis program aims to send people to the lunar surface in 2026, more than half a century since the last Apollo mission. Japan, a close U.S. ally, is seeking to become the second country after the United States to land an astronaut on the Moon.
Since being selected as candidates by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in February 2023, Suwa and Yoneda have engaged in basic training, including piloting a plane, health management in outer space and electrical engineering.
Suwa and Yoneda became the first astronauts approved by JAXA since 2011, when Kimiya Yui, 54, Takuya Onishi, 48, and Norishige Kanai, 47, were certified. JAXA now has seven astronauts, two of whom are expected to participate in the Artemis program.
